The Lovers

Régine and Christian Godefroid swapped their life in the cool, damp climate of the Brabant for a vineyard in the arid, hilly country between the Haut-Languedoc mountains and the Mediterranean sea. Christian’s small winery in the village of Faugères is called Les Amants (The Lovers); he chooses equally evocative and sensual names for his wines. Dans la Peau (Under the Skin) is made from thick-skinned syrah grapes. De Chair et De Sang (Flesh and Blood) get its fullness from grenache (the flesh) and its dense, dark colour from mourvèdre (the blood). The inspiration for Le Rouge aux Lèvres (Blood on the Lips) was an early ‘70s vampire film!  The vines are given only organic treatments and the harvest is done by hand. Each autumn, friends old and new work from first light to bring in the crop.  Régine keeps them going with regular supplies of coffee and water. The name of Christian’s juicy white wine, Soif de Toi (Thirst for You), is taken from a Psalm; it could have been written by any thirsty, lovelorn grape-picker…
